Changes On Media Law in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani parliament adopted two new amendments for the law On Mass Media.

According to the changes if media organization is sued twice during one-year period, it is supposed to discontinue its business. Before the changes media organization was allowed to be sued three times a year.

The amendments prohibits financing a media outlet in Azerbaijan from international funds and other legal entities.

Elesger Memmedli, a lawyer and media expert posted on his Facebook page that the law contradicts the European Convention on Human Rights, Article 10, and paragraph 2. Memmedli says the Convention considers only penalties and fines, rather than the closure of the media organization. “All the media - magazines, news agencies, Televisions, radios, online media – they all face the danger of closing down."

MP Zahid Oruc says the NGO activists and journalists, who criticize the government for the recent changes in the legislation serve foreign intelligence services.
