Meydan TV closed in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani online channel “Meydan TV” announced about closing of its office in Baku. The announcement on TV channels' website says that the reason for this is on-going crackdown on freedom of speech and the pressure against the independent media.

''Meydan TV management was forced to make this decision in order to protect its employees'', says the announcement.

This channel was created a year ago, with the financial support of the European Endowment for Democracy. The head office of the channel is located in Berlin. Its creator is Emin Milli. According to information on Meydan TV's website, Milli was imprisoned in 2009 for two and a half years for his critical views about the government and was conditionally released in November 2010, after serving 16 months of his sentence.

On December 5, well-known Azerbaijani journalist, Radio Liberty employee Khadija Ismayilova was detained after being questioned at the prosecutor's office. She was charged with incitement to suicide. If the fault of the journalist is proven, then she can be punished by a term of 3 to 7 years in prison.
