THE IDEA AND HISTORY OF MY PROJECT
When I started studying at GIPA I heard one phrase in the lesson. “Journalism is the first draft of history. Scholars use stories to write future history books”. The idea behind this phrase is providing accurate information and being credible journalist. And it starts with the double checking of each fact. In a short, “Double check” is guarantee of accuracy and credibility for me.
Taking into consideration all these aspects I have decided to name my website “Double Check”.
I think these two words (Double Check) describe the main idea and goal of the website. We want to serve people who want to be professional and if they are not sure what is true or not, they can check our website and get information about professional approaches to certain issues regarding journalism and media management.
7/24 means availability of website 7 days and 24 hours, and having a chance to check uncertain points without any limitations.
“Doublecheck724” aims to create a rich and useful source of knowledge about journalism and Media Management for students of journalism faculty, university lecturers and others who are interested to learn about their profession and improve their skills.
In my third semester I had to find ideas for the final project. I was thinking about possible options all day. Sometimes I was asking my friends to suggest their ideas. One day my friend and I were walking in the street, suddenly he said: was it difficult to find information at the university in Baku? I said, yes! What about creating website about journalism. Everything started with this question.
So idea is connected with my study years in Azerbaijan. It was hard for me to find Azerbaijani language sources and books in specific topics or courses. Even there were some courses that could be taught only by foreign teachers or people who have studied abroad. But we did not have a chance to reach those persons all the time. I also witnessed in some cases that our lecturers had difficulties to find sources. They translated from Russian to Azerbaijan and lectured to us.
Generally, it is very difficult to find hard copies of journalistic books and also information on the Internet in the Azerbaijan language. As a result students spend half of day in the library finding useful information for learning more about their profession. Or they are paying for extra trainings after lessons. Besides new courses as “Social Media”, “Online Journalism”, “Media Management”, “Media Marketing”, “Media Programming” and “Media Sales” are not taught in Azerbaijan universities or some of them are newly included in university programs.
Azerbaijan journalism students should have a chance to learn about their profession without going abroad. The idea of the project comes from the desire to improve professionalism in Azerbaijan media industry.
“Doublecheck724” website aims to create a rich and useful source of knowledge about journalism and Media Management for students of journalism faculty, university lecturers and others who are interested to learn about their profession and improve their skills. The content of the web site will cover journalism and Media Management from different perspectives, based on professional
reports, researches, articles, opinions and etc. Interviews with experts, professional journalists from Azerbaijan and other countries will also be published on the website.
We conducted a survey among students, beginner journalists to get their feedback to our new website. We asked questions to analyze the need among future website users. 9 out of 10 said it is needed to launch the website in Azerbaijan. And half of them would use website every day.
Here is detailed information about every question:
We decided to learn users’ opinions before defining sections on the website. Respondents want to get diverse information about journalism and media management fields.
The survey included the question about sources of information. Half of interviewees address their questions to experts, the rest use Internet – online books, honored media organizations’ guidelines such as BBC, Reuters, and so on.
Overall scenery of survey shows that our website will be useful source. While defining sections for the website we took into consideration results of buyer intension survey as well. Media management and journalism will be the main blocks on the website. Sub-sections will include TV reporting, print and online journalism etc.
